The largest water settlement is Kampong Ayer in Brunei. So live 30,000 people!

On the island of Kalimantan, also known as Borneo, the amazing Kampong Ayer settlement is located, consisting of 40 villages, each of which is built directly on the water along the river. About 30,000 inhabitants live in stilt houses.

Back in 1521, the famous traveler Fernand Magellan wrote about this eastern Venice in his logbook.

The history of Bandar Seri Begawan, the capital of Brunei, began with this unique settlement on the water. Kampong Ayer is a national treasure and an important part of the country, which is why the state makes a lot of efforts and allocates a lot of money to preserve and maintain the established lifestyle.

The government has created for the local population all the necessary infrastructure: built schools, modern medical facilities, police stations, mosques, cafes and shops. In the houses on the water, electricity, water and sewage are provided, there is cable and Internet.

The buildings here are connected by a huge number of bridges, the total length of which is over 36 kilometers.

Now new areas are appearing in the settlement, but the buildings in them are built of concrete using modern technologies and no longer have that vibrant brightness and traditional color diversity inherent in old houses.

Despite the original location, the transport system is well established, and there are no special difficulties in moving around the districts. The most common vehicle among tourists are special water taxis. Locals have their own boats, the size and quality of which can be judged on the level of prosperity of their owners.

People living in Kampong Ayer are distinguished by sincere friendliness and are always happy to open the doors of their houses to tourists who come here.
