From eternal winter to eternal summer: the most extreme cities of the planet

What could be weirder than a city that is in a place unsuitable for a comfortable life, where it is very cold or too hot, or maybe so high that it becomes difficult to breathe. They are usually isolated, but the locals seem to have adapted to such conditions and learned to live in them, and even very well. Recently, such cities were told in the Spanish newspaper El Pais. Let's see which places in our world are some of the most extreme.

Life in the conditions of extreme cold: Yakutia

The Spaniards put Yakutia in the first place, namely Yakutsk and Oymyakon. The capital of the Republic of Sakha was included in the list not only due to record low temperatures in winter, but also because it is located far from other large cities, in the depths of boundless snowy Siberia. It would seem that much further ... But 900 kilometers from it lies Oymyakon, which is officially recognized as the coldest settlement on the planet, where -71.2 degrees of frost were recorded.

The biggest swings: Verkhoyansk

Yakutia

The Spanish media also gave the second place to the Russian city - Verkhoyansk. He ended up on this line for one simple reason: it is in this severe Yakut settlement that the biggest drops on the planet. In winter, a maximum of -69.8 degrees was recorded here, and in summer the temperature often reaches 37 degrees. This means that the annual fluctuation reaches a record 106.8 degrees.

The hottest city: San Luis Rio Colorado (Mexico)

And in order to see the hottest city, you need to go to another part of the world. San Luis Rio Colorado is located in Mexico, and the temperature here once broke the world's maximum, rising to 59.5 degrees. The town, where about 120 thousand people live, lies on a small plateau surrounded by desert territories. However, San Luis Rio Colorado can be visited not only to experience the highest temperatures, but also to see the beautiful landscapes of the Mexican state of Sonora: volcanoes with lava frozen hundreds of years ago, sand dunes and contrasting with all this sea bay.

Roof of the world: La Rinconada (Peru)

La Rinconada is at a record height of 5,099 meters above sea level. Around the mountain, and the average daily temperatures are close to zero - people live in difficult conditions. Of course, their main income is the gold mines on which La Rinconada was founded. Tourism is also being developed here: people come here to go skiing and mountaineering.

Of course, this is not the only roof of the world: the rival of La Rinconada is located in Tibet - Chinese Wenquan stands at an altitude of 5019 meters above sea level. Their "roofs of the world", built at an altitude of more than four thousand meters, are in Bolivia, Argentina.

Life beyond sea level: Jericho (PNA territory)

Well, in order to visit the lowest located city, you must again go to the other end of the world - on the western bank of the Jordan lies Jericho, which is located 200 meters below sea level. And this city is considered one of the oldest on the planet.

Northmost city: Hammerfest (Norway)

Far beyond the Arctic Circle lies the city of Hammerfest, where more than 10 thousand inhabitants live. The average annual temperature here does not exceed 2 degrees. Despite this, the cold town is very popular with tourists who are heading to the North Cape - the northernmost point of Europe. And it disputes the title of the northernmost city of Longyearbyen in Spitsbergen and Utiagvik in Alaska, where it is also a very harsh life.

The southernmost city: Ushuaia (Argentina) and Puerto Williams (Chile)

Ushuaia is located about 1000 kilometers from Antarctica and always wore the title of the southernmost city on the planet. It is here that travelers go to see Tierra del Fuego, get acquainted with the culture of indigenous peoples, and also admire wild animals. Recently, however, Chilean Puerto Williams, in which only 2 thousand people live, has been competing with this Argentine city. Actually, it has recently become a city, and it attracts tourists all for the same reasons: indigenous culture, penguins, whales, sea lions.

The most isolated city: Illoccortormiut (Greenland)

On the east coast of Greenland is one of the most remote cities on the planet - Illokkortoormiut. There are only 450 residents here, and you can get here only a few months of the year, and for this you will have to overcome a rather complicated route: first you need to fly by plane, and then sail by boat. People live here fishing and hunting, swim in canoes and move on sleighs drawn by dogs.

However, among the most isolated places there are several more applicants. For example, the Aleutian Islands, Pitcairn and Tristan da Cunha. But still life here, in comparison with Greenland, will seem like a paradise: year-round heat and the ocean are nearby.
